Film Review: ‘Without Remorse’: A Serviceable SEAL Actioner
Welp, it’s another Navy SEAL movie. “Without Remorse” is a screen adaptation of Tom Clancy’s bestselling 1993 novel, and decorated Navy SEAL Senior Chief John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan of “Creed” fame) is the SEAL in question, who lives with his wife in Washington, D.C. Michael B. Jordan and Lauren London in “Without Remorse.” (Nadja Klier/Paramount Pictures)
This is actually an origin story that shows us how John Kelly turns into John Clark, who is one of Clancy’s major characters, and who is portrayed by Willem Dafoe in “Clear and Present Danger” and Liev Schreiber in “The Sum of All Fears.”

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, available now on Amazon Prime Video, tackles one of those missions and the consequences that followed.
John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan) joins his SEAL brothers on a team led by Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith), sent to extract a hostage from Syria. As with many operations, not everything is quite what it seems. The SEALs weren’t given all the information about what they were getting into and who they were attacking. Because of the casualties related to the extraction, someone or some group is working to deliver payback to all involved with the SEAL team and there is bound to be collateral damage. Kelly’s life is about to change forever, but he is a survivor and he vows to fight back.

The figure of Livia Drusilla looms large in the history of Rome. For 50 years the wife of Julius Caesarâs adopted son, the emperor Augustus Caesar, she gave birth to another emperor, Tiberius, and from her line followed Caligula, Claudius and Nero.
In between she became Romeâs most powerful empress. Of course, that makes things sound a good deal simpler than they were. And, as this handsome new drama series makes plain, none of it might have happened at all had Livia not been such an extraordinary woman in her own right. âHowever many men you kill â and I have had to kill many â you never forget your first,â the older Livia (Kasia Smutniak) reflects as the camera acquaints us with her younger self.
Movies based on the Tom Clancy spy thriller novels have spawned a whole lot of reboots, remakes and semi-sequels throughout, starring everyone from Baldwins to Fords to Afflecks. The latest entry, Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse is surprisingly the best entry in the series since The Hunt for Red October, however as most of the films have been kind of crummy it isn’t exactly a deep bench. Maybe the batting average is solid with a Jack Ryan-verse movie every two decades but Without Remorse is one of the good ones, concerning a mission of vengeance with lots of new cold war overtones. The action is hard hitting, the lead actor is great, and there are multiple conspiracies and double-crosses which is mandatory in the spy thriller genre.
