North Country hospitals see a higher demand for services

North Country health officials are seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases across the region, a rise in demand for hospital services, and are pleading you to follow safety measures now more than ever. According to John Kanoza, Clinton County s Health Department director, contact tracers are having a hard time keeping up.They can no longer connect with positive cases on the same day they receive results, and people waiting for word from the health department is contributing to the spread. You do not need a public health order to separate yourself from others. If you have tested positive, or you know you have been exposed to a positive case, please stay home, Kanoza said. Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lisa Mark says it s important now more than ever to follow guidance from health officials. As of Friday at CVPH, they re treating more than 20 patients for COVID-19. That s certainly more than we ever had in early 2020 when we were at our peak of COVID th

Clinton County reports 102 new COVID cases since Christmas

Dec 28, 2020 Health officials reported 102 new coronavirus cases in Clinton County since Christmas, the sharpest increase in new infections the county has seen since the start of the pandemic.   John Kanoza, Director of Public Health in Clinton County, urged residents to remain vigilant over the holidays. “We have seen that spread of COVID-19 is largely occurring between friends and family members,  Kanoza wrote in a press release issued last week.  For the most part, residents are taking appropriate precautions when they are out in public, such as wearing masks and physically distancing, but then they’re getting together with friends and family members who don’t live in their home, and not taking precautions during these interactions,  Kanoza added.

Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, known as CVPH, in Plattsburgh. Photo: Emily Russell Dec 17, 2020 Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Champlain Valley Physicians’ Hospital (CVPH) would become the coordinating hub for the North Country’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign. Dr. Wouter Rietsema said Thursday that the number of calls the hospital received after Cuomo’s announcement indicates high public anticipation of COVID-19 vaccines.  Apparently we were inundated with phone calls this morning [from] patients wanting to get vaccine or wanting to know where to go to get vaccine, or wanting to get on waiting lists for vaccine, he said.

By CARA CHAPMAN Press-Republican Dec 8, 2020 SARANAC — The Saranac Central School District will have a fully remote schedule for the entirety of this week following reports of positive cases linked to multiple school buildings that led to dozens being quarantined. Superintendent of Schools Javier Perez wrote in a community update Saturday that a high school teacher and a fourth-grade Saranac Elementary student had tested positive. Sunday, he was notified about a student intern who had been infected. Perez wrote that Clinton County Public Health Director John Kanoza called him to recommend the move to distance learning due to both recent cases and the number of students sent home with symptoms last week.
