FOP honors Deputy Weist and community members who stepped up after his death

Several members of the Galesburg area community were presented with awards on Thursday from the Fraternal Order of Police Spoon River Valley Lodge #427. The awards were in recognition of individuals and organizations who stepped up following the killing of Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Nicholas Weist on April 29. Deputy Weist himself was awarded two honors posthumously from the lodge that he belonged to; including the FOP Valor and Life Saving Awards. Weist has killed trying to set up spike strips to stop a gun-wielding suspect who was fleeing from and firing at pursuing officers. The fleeing vehicle struck Weist but the vehicle was disabled because of his actions, allowing the suspect to be apprehended shortly later. There were several Galesburg area groups and people that received FOP's Blue and Gold Award. Some of those include; Military Memories and More in Knoxville and their owner Ryan Scalf for shutting down day-to-day operations to produce memorial items. Cooks & C
