The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the release of 17.94 acres of land at the airport last month that the county has slated for government expansion.  The county sent the request for land release in Dec. 2019 so the county could construct a 104,000 square foot government center.  The plan for development of the property is still under consideration.  Airport Operations Manager Kevin Daugherty presented the resolution at the March 23, 2021 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting which will release a portion of airport property from the FAA ownership to Hernando County.  According to County Administrator Jeff Rogers, the land is being considered for construction of new administration buildings for county offices.  The board approved unanimously. Plans for the site have not been finalized.  An illegible copy of a site plan was included in the agenda documents which depicting several smaller buildings, parking areas and warehouses but text is not legible.  The

Hernando leaders pleased with county's handling of COVID | News

BROOKSVILLE — On March 9, 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency. A week later, nightclubs and bars closed down for 30 days, beach gatherings were limited to groups of 10 people or less, and restaurants were limited to 50% capacity. In Hernando County, the past year has seen 11,370 cases of COVID-19 as of March 3 and 956 hospitalizations, according to the Department of Health Florida COVID dashboard. As vaccines roll out from Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, residents look toward a hopeful future where mask-wearing and social distancing become things of the past. County Commissioner John Allocco said he felt Hernando County handled the COVID crisis as well as the board had the legal ability to handle it. However, Allocco said he struggled with the constitutionality of close-down executive orders, and even more with the idea of “essential” versus “non-essential” businesses and employees. The mandatory closing of businesses deemed “

In Hernando County, a gated community gets some of the first coronavirus vaccine doses

In Hernando, a gated community gets some of the first coronavirus vaccine doses Some question why residents at the Wellington at Seven Hills will get about a third of the county’s initial doses.   Published Jan. 6 Updated Jan. 12 SPRING HILL — Spring Hill resident Sharon Swanson has repeatedly called the Florida Department of Health in Hernando County to schedule an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine. So far, she hasn’t gotten through. At 76, Swanson knows she is in a high-risk category for the disease, and she wants to be vaccinated as soon as possible. But Swanson said she didn’t expect that when the health department phone system buckled under the crush of calls, officials there would reach out to a gated community nearby, the Wellington at Seven Hills, to offer its residents hundreds of vaccine doses.

Attorney General declines to define "shooting range" with respect to local issue

Read so far Tue, 12/29/2020 - 11:35 Posted in: State Attorney General Ashley Moody declined to give a legal opinion to the Hernando County Attorney’s Office on whether Hernando County should enforce noise ordinances on persons using firearms on non-commercial property. The opinion stems from a citizen complaint in June of 2020.   An email was sent to Commissioner John Allocco regarding a neighbor’s concern of the owner of 12056 Eakin Street  and their guests using the property as a non-commercial shooting range.   Citing noise and safety concerns, Misty Cintron reached out to Allocco with the hope that the practice would be ceased through application of the Hernando County Noise Ordinance.

Hernando Supervisor of Elections / 2020 Election Wrap Up

Read so far Sun, 12/20/2020 - 13:40 Posted in:   Shirley Anderson reported on Hernando County’s 2020 election cycle at the December 15, 2020 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting.  Anderson reported a successful day, with a few notable differences over previous years. In what Anderson called a “challenging year,”  the Presidential Preference vote in March was hindered by the realization of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The SOE office saw many election workers leave their positions the day before that election.  Changes were instituted before the August Primaries, and a major recruitment effort began in September. Anderson reported that many new people responded, and trained to be poll workers as a result.
