i don t actually solve the mystery in the course of the story, that i thought it was important to lay out the story from the beginning to the verdict to the strange cultural after life of the case without officially taking a position so that so that it would be as even-handed as possible and would allow the readers to puzzle it out for themselves. there s also something i think that always feels a little bit like a cheat when you re reading a non-fiction narrative, and there s a solution to the central mystery, that it s hard not to think that and i think that this has been the case with prior works on the borden mystery. you do have the sense that people are really emphasizing and de-emphasizing parts of the story, and, again, that was something i didn t want to do. anyway, all that have is the background, and just to begin with what we know for certain and that is on august 4th, 1892, and drew and abby borden, an elderly couple, were found hacked to death in the w
