i think it s really about the death penalty. this case is about what it takes to get executed in this country. the trial has been very sensational and, look, we haven t mentioned it yet, but there was no point in pretending otherwise. there s been a lot in this trial about jodi arias s sex life with the victim in this case. there have been tapes of phone sex between them. obviously that played a big part. but, you know, the death penalty is in a weird moment in the united states right now. it is legal but it is declining. you know, there have only been 34 executions in arizona since 1976 when the death penalty came back in. there are only 127 people on death row in arizona. there are only three women on death row in arizona. it is unusual for someone like jodi arias even to face the death penalty and i think that s what really catapulted this case into the public consciousness,
jodi arias of murder in the first degree for killing her ex-boyfriend travis alexander. the jurors deliberated 16 hours after a four month trial. now that same jury will be tasked with deciding whether to execute her for her crime. they will recommend. our local affiliate has just finished interview with jodi arias. it will air on frun on the record with greta van mark? yeah, shep. my colleague troy hayden sat down exclusive whether i jodi arias shortly after she was convicted this afternoon. he sat down with her for 45 minutes. i just talked to him a little bit ago. he told me she was crying when the interview started. she was surprised by the verdict. she also told him that he prays for the jurors and she hopes that this verdict will bring peace for travis alexander s family. she also said if she could do all of this over again, she would have told police the truth from the very beginning instead of
now defense attorney, has been attending the trial for four months. how is beyond me. tell me what your thoughts are. well, first of all they ve been deliberating 2.5 days, that s within the realm of first degree. they had to give due respect to the evidence. if they came back the first day i wouldn t think it would be first degree. the jury came in as 10:00 rather than 9:00 and had the verdict before lunch. they didn t deliberate much. the only thing we know is it s not a hung jury but the other possibilities could happen in an hour. shepard: as you listen this was a unique experience for many of us. as we got to hear questions from the jurors. what did those questions tell you about where their heads or, if anything? well, some of the jurors are very sophisticated. it allows us to know about what they re thinking and at the same time allows them to actually
else in any way. one thing at which they were successful, if you listen to those who monitor the trial, and that was humanizing her and making connection between her and they hope one juror. to what degree are you concerned about that? this is a huge concern because even on her iq test she tested very, very high in manipulation. she s very intelligent, knows how to manipulate. and it is a concern. shepard: did she manipulate travis? absolutely. shepard: how. she absolutely manipulated travis. every time he tried to break up or separate, she threatened suicide, all kinds of things. absolutely. she s very good at it and very intelligent. but we all know she s lying and 90% of what she says is not true. even little details such as her hair color being blonde at our last national convention or
you there was a chance outside the courthouse justice for travis, they were chanting it over and over again. a big crowd of over 300 people and then as that verdict was read, they erupted in cheers. this was definitely a crowd that was against jodi arias. she did not many fans here in phoenix over the course of the last four years. i can tell you that inside the courthouse, the courtroom, travis family was there and they could be seen smiling and cheering and hugging each other and crying tears of joy, frankly he had couple family there, sisters, brothers and many friends who have followed this trial from the beginning. very little reaction from jodi arias. i could see she was biting her lip and appeared as if she may started crying but didn t. she looked back at her mother and her aunt and a friend that were seated hinder. again, not a lot of emotion from
