good to be with you, i m katy tur. first it was the leaked memo from an air force general, warning his officers to prepare for a hot war with china in 2025. then it was news the u.s. is expanding its military presence in southeast asia, adding four more bases in the philippines on the doorstep of china. and now, the pentagon is faced with a chinese spy balloon first spotted over montana, which, by the way is home to one of the united states three nuclear silo fields. just a moment ago in a series of questions from reporters, brigadier general patrick ryder confirmed the balloon is not just drifting, that china is in control of it. the balloon is maneuverable. clearly it s violated u.s. airspace, and again, we ve communicated that fact to the prc. the fact is we know that it s a surveillance balloon. and i m not going to be able to be more specific than that. and we do know that the balloon has violated international airspace and international law which is unacceptable. we
pbs, rick stengel, an msnbc political analyst and gordon chang, newsweek columnist. yammish, what do we know about this call between president biden and president xi jinping? we know the president for a long time has called china the u.s. s main competitor and said there is this really tug of war between democracy and autocracy this is really a high-stakes call and also a call president biden is welcoming because he has said diplomacy is the thing america should be known for. he s said over and over again that america is back. there s a lot going on there. we should also note that hanging over this call is the potential trip between house speaker nancy pelosi and taiwan. there s a lot of criticism coming from china, based on reporting, that says she should not take this trip and it could set off a sort of crisis. others are saying, if she cancels that trip, the u.s. would look week, including to nations like japan. there s a lot going on the domestic front and the nationa
years. it doesn t look good and i couldn t help but laugh as you are playing these clips talking about the president s accomplishments in office. he hasn t accomplished anything other than running up the debt, weakening the economy and strengthening inflation. the worst part about the weak gdp numbers that came out today was that the inflation numbers that are part of the gdp in q1 of this year, inflation actually strengthened over the fourth quarter of last year. so not only is the economy weakening but inflation is strengthening. you have the worst of both worlds. it s going to get worse. laura: paul krugman over at the new york times, he s writing that the economy is in better shape than i suspect most pundits and well-informed readers are realizing the america experience a fast job
for the strongest job market recovery in our history. 517,000 jobs in januar as you ve been discussing. we don t look at one month. we re always looking to see the trend. you can have a month that surprises, as we saw for january. 12.1 million jobs, that s the trend since the president got here. that s the overall number throughout all the different industries and sectors. if we look at manufacturing, up 800,000 jobs. that s a very important sector to this president, and what s more, we build on those gains with plans for 2023, when it comes to executing the inflation reduction act, c.h.i.p.s act and bipartisan infrastructure law. we re not just sitting on our hands, we want to build on what we have seen so far. americans are still suffering, still feeling a lot of pain, especially from inflation at the grocery store, it s just too high still.
