They were joy manifest.
Mack and Smith were warm, joyful souls who shared their happiness with others before their tragically similar deaths on Jan. 18 and Jan. 22, said those gathering at a memorial service for them at the center on Monday, Feb. 1.
“I’m heartbroken they are not here with us anymore,” said the Rev. Victoria Lovell, Zion Lutheran Church associate pastor, who officiated at the service.
Mack, 69, was hit by an oncoming car on Jackson Avenue on Jan. 18, while he was crossing the street to get to the hotel he was staying at with the assistance of the center. He’d just gotten off a bus at a posted bus stop near the hotel at about 7 p.m., according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.
