Peconic Estuary Partnership seeks CPF money from towns
Should Southold Town allocate a portion of its Community Preservation Fund revenues to help the Peconic Estuary Partnership?
The organization, which works to protect the waterways and wetlands surrounding Peconic Bay, has asked all five towns on the East End to chip in, with the goal of matching its federal allocation of $700,000 over three years.
“We’re looking to towns to assist us with funds that can be used operationally for the program as well as for the ongoing water quality work and habitat work that we do around the Peconics,” PEP executive director Joyce Novak explained to the Town Board during a work session Tuesday.

Growing traffic concerns could lead to a new weight limit for vehicles traveling along Peconic Bay Boulevard in Southold.
Councilwoman Sarah Nappa discussed the idea at a town work session Tuesday, conceding that traffic is a “difficult” issue to address.
“While [a weight limit] will not solve all the problems, it will start to chip away at the problem of trucks and limos being routed that way,” she said, noting that a limit would exclude local deliveries.

Officials discussed the issue during a work session Tuesday, ultimately agreeing they should seek public input before deciding whether to opt out of allowing marijuana sales and forfeiting tax revenue following the recent state legislation to legalize the drug.
Towns and villages have until the end of the year to decide whether to opt out, which would specifically prohibit retail sales and on-site consumption, but would not impact someone’s ability to possess, use or grow marijuana at their residence.
Though there’s many discussions left to be had, one board member expressed support for getting to work on regulating the industry so the town is well prepared.

November’s election will feature something not seen in more than three decades in Southold Town: a contested race for town clerk.
The Southold Town Democratic Committee announced Monday that Candace Hall, a native of Greenport, has earned the nomination for clerk.
Ms. Hall is a small-business owner, licensed insurance broker and former preschool teacher who says she is passionate about ensuring diverse representation for minority children.
She said she’s thrilled to bring her positive energy, administrative and management skills and commitment to the community to Town Hall.
