Spencer Steer doubled with two outs in the ninth inning for the Cincinnati Reds' first hit against the San Francisco Giants' Alex Cobb on Tuesday night. With Cobb one out from a no-hitter, Steer sliced an opposite-field double that landed just over the outstretched glove of right fielder Luis Matos. Nick Senzel was credited with a single in the third inning on a two-hopper that third baseman Casey Schmitt snagged with a backhand grab.
Afterward, having come oh so close to pitching a no-hitter with his family in the stands willing it to happen, Alex Cobb took a moment to thank center fielder Austin Slater for the sensational diving catch that preserved the bid. Cobb did the same with Giants manager Gabe Kapler, offering up some gratitude for being given the opportunity. Kapler stuck with Cobb even as the pitch count went higher than it had ever been.
The Arizona Diamondbacks jumped to an early four-run lead, and nearly blew it in the ninth inning. Tommy Pham lost a homer when a kid snatched the ball from Cincinnati left fielder Spencer Steer's glove, but the Diamondbacks did enough offensive damage before that to beat the Reds 10-8 on Friday night. “Once I saw what happened, I had the same reaction every fan had in the stadium that it was a pretty remarkable play by the kid,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.
