MOT test changes: Proposals call for vehicles with new technology to be regularly checked

“However, motoring technology is continually advancing and the MOT has always been developed to reflect that. “As more and more drivers have new technology in their vehicles, it is natural that they will get used to relying on these driver aids, therefore it is essential that these are regularly checked to ensure they will work properly in an emergency.” KwikFit found drivers who have received an MOT failure in the past were most in favour of updating the test. Those who had failed previously were 15 percent more likely to believe the changes should be made. READ MORE The MOT test was last updated in May 2018 where stricter rules were imposed on a range of car parts as well as the introduction of new defect categories.

Record number of vehicles flunked the MOT test last year due to emissions

The introduction of new emissions checks as part of the updated MOT test has seen a spike in UK vehicles automatically flunk the assessment due to what is coming out of their exhausts. And it s diesel cars that are suffering the most, with over 420,000 being pulled up on emissions in 2019/20 - up 240 per cent on 2017/18, research has revealed. Vehicles fail MOT in record numbers due to emissions

1 person found this useful A record number of vehicles – almost 1.3 million – failed their MOT last year, because of faults relating to exhaust emissions, new data suggests.  A Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the DVSA found more cars have failed on emissions in the past two years than any other before it. Overall failures last year were up by more than 70% compared to 2017/18 levels – the final year before the new regulations were introduced. Diesel vehicles have seen the greatest surge in failures due to emissions, with a rise of 240% compared to just 37% for petrol vehicles, says BookMyGarage.com, which tabled the FOI.
