City of Winnipeg exploring options on future of the Hudson's Bay building

WINNIPEG The City of Winnipeg is looking to figure out what to do with the now-vacant Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) building downtown. On Tuesday, Mayor Brian Bowman announced the creation of The Bay Downtown Advisory Committee, which will advise city council on the opportunities for future use of the building, located at 450 Portage Avenue. “Many Winnipeggers, myself included, have very fond memories of The Bay downtown,” Bowman said in a news conference. “It has historical significance to the history of our city. “While it is disappointing to see this landmark location close its doors, it represents an opportunity to think creatively about how this prime real estate can have significance in Winnipeg’s downtown.”

Mitchell Middle School s Principal made sure their tradition of collecting donations for Southeast Helping Hands and Steinbach Community Christmas was not forgotten this year. Andrew Mead says collecting food for charity is a big part of the Christmas Season over at Mitchell Middle. This year was a bit of a challenge because we don t have a lot of kids at school and we are just trying to encourage families to stay home. We thought we would do a mobile pick up. I put a little Rudolph on the front of my truck and drove around Mitchell and met families at the end of their driveways and they filled my truck up.

Frontline Family Forward gives back to essential workers

WINNIPEG A Winnipeg woman is giving back to frontline workers with what she’s calling a “pay if forward project.” Jessica Dumas started Frontline Family Forward, a program that gives the community a chance to show its appreciation for local frontline workers by nominating them for a free dinner from a local restaurant. The program is geared towards health-care workers, home care workers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and teachers, but Dumas said no one nominated will be turned away. People have the option of nominating frontline workers, a restaurant, or giving a monetary donation. Dumas said the initiative is a way to support local business and give back to those working to keep us safe.
