Struggling renters living in largely rural Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are among those receiving the most COVID-19 rental assistance in the country.
Rural poverty rates in the U.S. are higher than in urban areas – 16.1% compared to 12.6%, according to the 2018 American Community Survey – but the primary reason these renters are seeing more dollars is the way the Emergency Rental Assistance Program is being administered by the Treasury Department.
A February analysis by USA TODAY of all 50 states showed that renters living in rural states that have majority white populations were disproportionately receiving the most federal rental assistance from the first $25 billion made available in December. Vermont, for example, was among the top three states in the country receiving substantially more money per eligible renter, the analysis found.
