Two VASCI Faculty Receive Major NIH Grants from its Knockout Mouse Project

December 21, 2020 Jesse Mager UMass Amherst veterinary and animal science researchers Kim Tremblay and Jesse Mager, a wife-and-husband team nationally known for expertise in embryonic development, have each received five-year awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study distinct stages of embryo development in mice that have had essential genes knocked out. They will collaborate with Wei Cui, director of the Animal Models Core at the campus’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences. Specifically, Mager and Tremblay, who are co-investigators on each other’s grants, have chosen to investigate a large number of lethal genes whose function is not well understood or not studied at all. Amherst Planning Board delays action on Town Council subcommittee's proposed zoning changes

Amherst Planning Board delays action on Town Council subcommittee’s proposed zoning changes Updated Dec 21, 2020; AMHERST – The Planning Board appeared on verge of moving ahead with zoning amendments proposed by a Town Council subcommittee, but the board’s chairman, Jack Jemsek, announced no action would be taken after several residents objected to the amendments that includes a 40-R “smart growth” overlay district proposed for downtown. Only one of the seven planning board members objected to the zoning proposals at Wednesday’s meeting, Janet McGowan. The chairman said the idea presented by the council’s Community Resources Committee [CRC] would be reviewed again, during a meeting likely to be scheduled in January. The CRC is chaired by Council Vice President Mandi Jo Hanneke.
