A North Avondale apartment building owned by a Black Cincinnati resident and occupied by Black renters appraised for $100,000 lower than it was worth due to bias, a complaint to HUD alleges.
The neighborhood was about $500,000. so the family sought out a different appraiser and stripped all references to their blackness. i was walking around the house, taking things down. i started tearing. i was crying. their white realtor acted as the homeowner. the new appraisal amount, $557,000. so potentially it lost $100,000 for my kids and my kid s kids, and my kid s kids. it just lit a fire under me. reporter: parker filed a complaint with the department of housing and urban development. which is now investigating. the original appraisal company declined to comment. the appraiser s attorney saying in part his appraisal conformed to the proper analysis and the notion that race was a factor is wrong. the mortgage company said it was performed by a licensed, independent, unaffiliated appraiser, and contained no discrimination. adding they requested a separate appraisal company to review the original and confirmed the results were appropriate and legitimate.
