massachusetts, and i was from lexington, and both of us have spent the rest of our lives in virginia. gordon, as a student at the college of william & mary took great interest in its history. we took great interest in sticking cigarettes in the mouths of his sculptures. we also lit them. but that s gordon has gone on to be a prominent sculptor. for many of you, if you have been to st. matthew s cathedral, you ll see his sculpture there, in particular of pope john paul. you also can see his sculpture in washington, d.c. in tribute to leo jabrone, the prophet. at harpers ferry in honor of john brown. and most prominently, if you ve been to colonial williamsburg, at one end, you will find in front of a red building, we call it at william & mary, the statue of governor botetourt. the original statue dedicated just before the american revolution. it was a little worse for wear by 1950, so it was put on display at the museum portion of the library at the college of william & mary
he was history teacher and came to congress and realized there was no organization saying nice things about the congress and thought there ought to be somebody who did that and created the u.s. capitol historical society as a way to create an organization whose responsibility would be to educate the public about the capital, the capital building, the people who served here and the architecture that s here. for over 50 years, we have been doing this with publications. with guide books to the capital. calendars that we produce and many members purchase and issue to their constituents. and other ways. we re formed by congress, but we re not a federal agency. we re a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization. we have to raise all of our own dollars for people who help sponsored this evening tonight are part of that organization of people who help us stay in business. and every year we try and honor a committee of the congress. this year the ways and means committee and we try and alter
