Police officer stole drugs from prescription medicine drop box at station, prosecutor alleges

A police officer was charged with stealing prescription drugs from a drop box intended for the public to dispose of unused medications at his department’s headquarters in Bergen County, authorities said Tuesday.
Oradell Police Officer Jeffrey Peters “gained access on several occasions and removed prescription narcotics,” from the locked drop box in the police station lobby, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. The officer faces charges of theft and drug possession, authorities said.
On Jan. 2, Peters allegedly removed a pill bottle of Percocet painkillers from the locked container, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case, which also cited surveillance footage.

Jeffrey Peters, 41, of Hawthorne “gained access on several occasions and removed prescription narcotics” from the locked drop box in the police department lobby, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said Tuesday.
Peters, who joined the department in 2016, was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the charges, the prosecutor said.
He was released pending a Feb. 10 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on theft and illegal drug possession charges.

Oradell cop stole drugs from medication drop box, prosecutor says
An Oradell police officer was charged with stealing from a lock box that the police department makes available for residents to drop off their unwanted prescription drugs.
Prosecutors began investigating Jeffrey Peters after they were alerted that he may have entered the Project Medicine Drop box, which he does not have access to.
Investigators said he accessed the box on several occasions and took drugs. Peters was arrested on Monday.
The boxes, which look like a Post Office mailbox, allows people to leave unused prescription medicine for proper disposal. The boxes are part of a national campaign to clear medicine cabinets, which fuel opioid addictions, as well as to keep people from contaminating water supplies through flushing them down the toilet.
