Light rail for South Jersey inches along but some neighbors don’t want noisy train in their backyard
Updated Jan 19, 2021;
It still may be a half-dozen or more years before Joseph Noverati’s nerves are rattled by up to 200 tram train horns a day alerting everyone and everything on the tracks ahead that it is coming down the line.
But Noverati, of Woodbury, is sounding the alarm now. He is warning neighbors and anyone who will listen that he thinks a cheaper, and yes quieter, alternative to the proposed light rail destined to connect Camden to Glassboro would better suit their needs.
CAMDEN The brick edifice, empty for decades, sits decaying on Camden s first charted plot: Block 1, Lot 1, along a mostly derelict stretch of Delaware Avenue. Two plastic pontoons marked with black spray-painted squiggles rest atop cinderblocks outside the Benjamin Cooper House, built in 1734 by the grandson of the city s first settler.
Weeds and reeds grow along the shoreline of the Delaware River next to the house; mounds of dirt and generations of maritime and industrial waste obstruct the view of the river. Deer tracks in the mud that long ago overtook cobblestone streets, trash, crumbling warehouses and graffiti show how this once-bustling area of North Camden has gone feral.

This is the fifth time in the last 10 years the DRPA has postponed raising tolls. There has not been a toll increase on the authority s four Delaware River bridges in the last decade.
The DRPA also approved a slight reduction to the organization s 2021 operating budget, setting it at just over $305 million for the upcoming calendar year. The Board and DRPA leadership team has worked over the past several years to ensure that the organization runs efficiently and effectively, DRPA Chairman Ryan Boyer said.
