Nearly two weeks into 2021 already? I was just getting used to saying “2020.” Now I have to add a syllable every time. “One.” There’s continued talk of companies likeFinance of America, loanDepot, SoFi, and Homepoint going public, and if Caliber and AmeriHome will after delaying things in October. Many experts are predicting another strong housing market in 2021. “Strong” can mean either lots of volume, or price appreciation. Or both. “They” are forecasting increased demand from buyers who delayed purchasing homes due to the pandemic, from existing homeowners who need larger spaces to accommodate parents working from home, children attending school virtually, and from condo owners who are seeking to escape multifamily buildings for single-family houses to mitigate exposure to the virus. nothing structural. knick knacks, picture frames that fell from the wall. i have been very fortunate. no interruption in power, gas, internet, satellite tv. i ve been watching you guys all day. i ve been very fortunate. and jeff, when it comes to what happens next, you know, we ve been hearing the experts saying there could be many more aftershocks. there have been aftershocks. does that make you anxious at all? is there an underlying anxiety of, gosh, is this going to happen again? do you think about that? absolutely. after the 7.1 hit, monitoring facebook, and next thing you know you start seeing rumors about something that might hit that s even bigger. the first thing i did was pack to-go bags. one for me, one for my pets. they re in the car right now. my truck, it s in the driveway ready to go. all i ve got to do is put the pets in the truck and get out of
here. i m ready to leave. how long have you lived in southern california, jeff? i moved here from northern new jersey 23 1/2 years ago. that means you were there after northridge, right? right. so what we learned from the experts and i guess the historical pattern is that the 7.1, even the 6.4, they aren t anomalous. it s the absence of one for so long that really is unusual. having come after the big one so many years ago in the early 90s, does this make you reconsider where you are? absolutely. as a matter of fact, i m likely to retire within the next five to seven years. i ve always said i wanted to retire here in ridgecrest. it s a nice community, very affordable from a california perspective. but now i m not so sure i want to live here after i retire. such a frightening experience. yeah.
