we re back with breaking news. protests erupting in st. louis after the acquittal of a former police officer. at least one person has been arrested in these protests. earlier today, a judge found jason stockily, a former cop who is white, not guilty in the 2011 killing of anthony lamar smith, a black man. dash cam and cell phone video were pivotal in the case. after the shooting, a camera inside the cruiser showed stockily retrieving something in a bag. prosecutors accused him of planting a gun in smith s car. stockily said he was trying to get medical aid from his bag to help smith. let s go to cnn s ryan young. ryan, only stockily s dna was on the gun found in smith s car. the evidence on its face seemed to be stacked against stockily. how did the judge come to find
the st. louis police say 13 people have been arrested. four police officers have been assaulted. officer stockily was charged last year with first degree murder. pleaded not guilty. waived his right to a jury trial. today, a judge cited with a former officer despite prosecutor claims he carried out a premeditated plan to kill anthony lamar smith. we begin our coverage live in st. louis. ryan, this is a city that has faced unrest before. but now, these protests no longer considered peaceful. what are protesters telling you? they re tellinging us they re going to re-group now. if you look at the streets, they re empty, but they re going to meet at a park about a half hour from now. it got energized here in the middle f f of this intersection. at that point, protesters wanted to block the bus. officers stepped in the middle between the bus and protesters
we want to return to some breaking news that we talked about a little bit in the streets of st. louis, missouri, after a judge declared that a former police officer is not guilty in the shooting and killing of a black man. st. louis police are tweeting their officers are currently being hit with water bottles at the scene and demonstrators are being ordered to disburse. officer jason stockily charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of anthony scott following a police chase back in 2011. stockily shot smith five times. the officer said he saw smith holding a gun and felt his life was in danger. prosecutors said stockily pla planted a gun some smith s car before he shot him.
