Downtown Champaign glass tree comes to life thanks to recycled bottles, dedicated workers

CHAMPAIGN — By day, Jason Mack is the building manager for Champaign First United Methodist Church. By night and on weekends, he and a team of workers have been building a large glass Christmas tree on the north edge of downtown. “We put the last layer of glass toward the top,” Mack said. “This weekend, we will put more glass on the base to survive the winter.” Located at the northeast corner of Washington and Neil streets, the tree rises 31 feet in the air and weighs 1.5 tons. It is made of 10,000 recycled bottles. Mack said thousands of people have discovered the work of art already.

Shattering Records with Glass Christmas Tree in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN-Glassblower Jason Mack is going outside the art studio and into the outdoors this Christmas season. The glass Christmas tree he has erected outside is 31 feet tall and by making it, he is attempting to break the previous record (27.5 feet) held in Italy for height of glass Christmas trees. He says the point of this project is to get out of his glassblowing studio and get the community involved in a trying time.  To do this, he has built a mobile furnace, which he will have lifted to where he is to drip the liquid glass around the rotating metal frame. He says this technique is completely new.
