There s so Much More to Summer Than Ice Cream

This summer, we re giving ice pops, raspas, snow cones, and more a taste. By Gwendolyn Knapp and Timothy Malcolm 5/31/2021 at 6:00am Published in the Summer 2021 issue of Houstonia Since 2016, Jonathan Delgado has turned out the hits seasonally (February–October) with refreshing all-natural ice pops—strawberry lemonade, passion-guava-mango, and banana pudding with wafers. Some, like the raspa and snow cone, are perfectly throwback, best enjoyed in a parking lot in your car with the AC blastin’ or on a shady wooden patio. Others, like homemade gelato, speak to our city’s refined culinary tastes—buon appetito. These are our favorite five standbys.

If you haven t yet visited Henderson & Kane in the Old Sixth Ward, this might be a good time.  The general store announced last week the addition of Aaron Lazo to its team. Lazo spent 35 years at the beloved Burt s Meat Market & Cajun Foods, which closed in March. He ll work with chef de cuisine Jesse Gallegos to tweak Henderson & Kane s sausage menu while introducing homemade chorizo verde, breakfast sausage, and smoked bratwurst. But that isn t all. H&K owners John and Veronica Avila also announced the upcoming Old Sixth: Sodas, Sweets, and Spirits at 2111 Washington Ave. Here, the Avilas envision a combination of old-school ice cream parlor with soda counter and jazzy cocktail lounge—think boozy milkshakes and ice cream cocktails along with traditional ice cream flavors and standalone beverages. Also, table-side fondue.

New retro soda and sweet shop serves up boozy shakes + more on WashAve Courtesy of Old Sixth The owners of Henderson & Kane are bringing a classic soda fountain to the Old Sixth Ward. Veronica and John Avila will open Located in the former Frametek building at 2111 Washington Ave., the Old Sixth puts a modern spin on the classic soda fountains of the 40s and 50s. The concept will combine an ice cream shop with a cocktail bar to serve floats, milkshakes (both regular and boozy), tableside fondue, and more. To bring the Old Sixth to life, the Avilas formed the Sixth Ward Collective in partnership with local beverage consultant Jojo Martinez and Sweet Cup Gelato owner Jasmine Chida. Expect scoops of ice cream in the afternoon with live jazz and cocktails in the evening.
