transcripts of the interviews it has conducted in its investigation. the request came on april 20th with the doj indicating that some committee interviews may contain information relevant to a criminal investigation we are conducting. nbc news has now confirmed that reporting. the doj did not indicate the number of transcripts they wanted or if there were any specific interviews they were interested in. so far the committee has interviewed more than 1,000 people, including many close to the twice-impeached former president. while attorney general merrick garland has received criticism about the justice department s response to the insurrection, this is the latest sign of the department appearing to escalate the scope of its inquiry. and as the new york times also points out several months ago the department quietly detailed a former federal prosecutor from maryland to the department headquarters. he s overseeing the politically fraught question of whether a case can be made
january 6th committee chairman bennie thompson is actually speaking about that with his democratic colleagues on a call that was already scheduled today talking about the ways that the january 6th committee when they accessed this information were much more careful and deliberate in terms of who even had access to it. they were really into the idea of a chain of custody. there was a lot of coordination with the capitol police, when it actually came down to what footage they were going to show during the committee hearings. there were a limit number of people on the committee who actually could view this footage. a lot of concern around security, and just kind of making sure that everyone was looped in during that process, as the committee accessed it. clearly now that s not what s happening with tucker carlson s show. of course capitol police didn t provide this directly to carlson. they made that clear to us as well saying when congress asks for something, they give it to congress. an

making it go through the long-term planning that s required in the united states senate. we re waiting to see if a deal will be struck in that regard. there s some senators on the republican side asking for amendments. that s the short-term problem. government funding could run out as soon as friday. the longer-term problem is the spending bill in general. there s republicans that would prefer not to see a long-term omnibus spending plan. they would rather have the conversation moved to next year when the republicans have the control of the house of representatives and they have more power over the negotiations. they have made a top line agreement between senate republicans, house democrats and senate democrats. they are pushing towards that goal and hoping they can wrap it up next week. ryan, also, big news here as it relates to january 6th. just this morning, january 6th committee chairman bennie thompson providing an update on what we can expect in next week s report. what can you
