who fancied himself in authority on the performing arts has overshadowed the e passing of a former head of state with real authority in the arts. the authority of an author, a playwright. whose decent landed him in jail as a threat to the dictatorship that controll eled czechoslovak died sunday at his country house. the brilliant and courageous theater maker brought him to new york in 1968 for the theater production of his second play. that was the last time that havel was allowed out of czechoslovakia s rule. he became the most famous and jailed repeatedly included in january 1989.
