Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s Sundance-winning feature-length documentary
Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) has been acquired by The Walt Disney Company’s Searchlight Pictures and Hulu.
Under terms of the deal put together by Disney General Entertainment’s BIPOC Creator initiative, led by Tara Duncan, the acquisition is for worldwide rights, with the film set for theatrical release and to stream on Hulu in the U.S. It will stream internationally on Star and Star+.
The acquisition comes two days after Thompson’s directorial debut won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize for U.S. documentary competition and Audience Award.

Murder Among the Mormons, a three-part documentary, will revisit the trio of bombings in Salt Lake City in 1985 that shocked the local Mormon community and threatened the historical foundations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The series is a BBC Studios Production and releases on the streaming giant March 3.

Amin Nawabi is not the real name of the Afghan refugee introduced in the Sundance movie “Flee,” nor is that his real face, which has been distorted by animation to protect his identity. As “Flee” unfolds, you may also start to question whether the story Amin shares is even real, doubling back and contradicting itself as it does over the course of director Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s unconventional portrait.

Neon made one of the first 2021 Sundance acquisitions on Friday with Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s “Flee,” executive produced by Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
The film, which sold for an undisclosed seven-figure amount after an overnight bidding war, was officially selected for Cannes 2020 and made its debut on opening night of Sundance in the World Documentary Competition to rave reviews.
