First responders in Delaware County don t encounter hazardous-material spills often, but they work to stay prepared just in case one occurs.
The drill scenario was a traffic accident that caused a tanker truck to leak hydrofluoric acid, a highly corrosive and toxic liquid. It can cause dangerous burns through contact or by being inhaled.
The event included 11 fire departments on the scene, evacuation of nearby residences, volunteers portraying hazmat victims and press briefings as the event unfolded in real time.
The drill was coordinated by Delaware County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee, an interagency group of first responders, industry representatives and other local partners.

Delaware County emergency personnel and first responders will gather the morning of June 14 for a hazardous-materials spill training drill on the recently completed Home Road extension, which runs near Graphics Way, east of U.S. Route 23 in Orange Township.
County communications director Jane Hawes said the Delaware County Local Emergency Planning Committee will conduct the drill as if it were a real disaster event. Conducting these drills is an important part of maintaining preparedness, and we are excited to get back to doing them (in real life) and not just virtually. It is worth noting that while many counties in Ohio are opting not to hold such drills this year, Delaware County will continue safely with this important preparedness activity, Hawes said.

That, I was told, was back behind a baseboard. And how it got back there I can t even hope to tell you. But that was another one of the goodies that they found, she said.
The historical material was framed for hanging by Benny Shoults of Frame Artistry, 176 W. Lincoln Ave., Hawes said. In talking with Benny, we decided, Let s create what they call shadow boxes to mount them properly, and we can display them. They ll kind of be like their own little history lesson for the building, she said.
