Protest Held Monday In Santana Row In Solidarity With Palestinians In Sheikh Jarrah

Bay City News Foundation Free, free Palestine echoed through the streets of San Jose s Santana Row as more than 200 protesters marched Monday evening.
Local advocacy groups American Muslims for Palestine, BLACK Outreach S.J. and the Palestinian Youth Movement held a protest to voice their outrage against the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the United States funding to Israel. In these last days of the month of Ramadan, Israel and its occupying forces have escalated the attacks against Palestinians in Jerusalem and Gaza, Ghiyath Alazzah, an organizer with Palestinian Youth Movement, said in front of The Counter restaurant. They have stormed Al-Aqsa mosque and fired rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas canisters at Palestinians worshipping in and around the mosque and in Sheikh Jarrah.
Big City Mayors Call On State To Allocate $20 Billion To Curb Homelessness

California s Big City Mayors, a coalition of mayors from the 13 largest cities, are calling on the state to allocate half of its $40 billion surplus to local governments to curb and end homelessness.
The ask: $4 billion per-year, five-year investment for a total of $20 billion in flexible funding as part of the state budget. There s no question it s a big investment, coalition chair and San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said at a virtual news conference on Thursday. But spending half of a surplus on the biggest problem we faced in California, and making that commitment last for a half decade, that s money well spent.
County Launches New Disaster Preparedness Website

Santa Cruz County has launched a new disaster preparedness website through its Office of Response, Recovery and Resilience, officials announced Friday.
The website provides residents with resources and information on current disaster recovery efforts as well as resources to prepare for the event of a disaster.
The website was launched at the directive of county supervisors in response to the CZU Lightning Complex Fires.
Residents can visit www.santacruzcounty.us/OR3.aspx to learn about upcoming events, sign up for newsletter updates and connect with the community-based Long-Term Recovery Group.

South Bay leaders are gathering at San Jose City Hall on Saturday morning to stand against the rise in hate crimes and discrimination against the Asian community.
The Stop AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Hate rally is hosted by Assemblyman Evan Low, D-Campbell, and San Jose City Councilmember Pam Foley.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, local leaders including State Sen. Dave Cortese, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Santa Clara County supervisors Joe Simitian and Susan Ellenberg will join the rally at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda.
Suspect faces hate crime, assault charges in attack on woman at train station

A San Francisco man suspected of attacking a woman and calling her ethnic slurs at a San Jose train station this week is set to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
The 26-year-old woman, who is of Asian descent, was waiting for a morning commuter train at Diridon Station about 7 a.m. Wednesday when Johan Strydom allegedly attacked her, police said.
Authorities said Strydom, 32, grabbed the woman by her neck, threw her onto the floor and said (Expletive) you, Asians.
