Local Black Artist Paints "This Is More Than A Moment, This Is A Movement" at Little Acorn Park

July 10, 2021 at 5:30 pm by Atmika Iyer On Juneteenth, a mural designed by local Black artist Chanté Glover depicting Martin Luther King Jr. and Gianna Floyd, the daughter of George Floyd, was unveiled at Little Acorn Park.  Glover tried to incorporate symbolism throughout the piece that expressed the idea of Black Lives Matter being an ongoing movement, they said. The mural, which was commissioned by the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District and UC Santa Barbara’s Associated Students, shows the two surrounded by a red ribbon and flying yellow canaries. During the summer of 2020, UCSB alum Mikio Sacramento contacted the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District (IVRPD) about creating a mural in the college town reflecting on the Black Lives Matter Movement. Soon, former Associated Students External Vice President for Local Affairs Yasamin Salari, IVRPD Recreation Coordinator Luis Valerio and Sacramento began meeting regularly to turn Sacramento’s idea
