Matthew Pearson, from Washington state, sent a letter to Iowa State Patrol offices which the organization posted on Facebook Monday. I participate in the Special Olympics and I show support for law enforcement, Pearson wrote. I would like to express my condolences to Sgt. James K. Smith s family. We don’t do this often, but your kind words and drawing really touched our hearts, the State Patrol wrote in its Facebook post.  The letter included a picture of Smith, who was shot and killed in Grundy Center in April. Smith, a 27-year veteran of the Patrol, died from a gunshot wound after he and other law officers went into a home to arrest Michael Thomas Lang, who was inside.
