And in the spirit of the movement is truly my honor and privilege to introduce the one who will bring the message to us today, one who is the epitome of grace, beauty, respect leadership, one who represents the direct lineage of the one who spoke on these very grounds, 50 years ago today, in this god ordained moment, we bought him this afternoon rev. Dr. Bernice king, who is the chief executive officer of the king center which was founded by her mother in 1968. She was appointed to this position in january 2012 by the board of trustees. Dr. King is nationally and internal ashley known as one of the most prolific, powerful, motivated and anointed our doors in todays season. She leaves audiences require you to think and process what you have heard and then stand up

Bush, congressman lewis congressman sewall mayor evans it is an honor for me to be on the stage with you today and welcome all of these people to this great state of alabama. Its a personal honor for me to join in todays historic occasion on the Edmund Pettus bridge that has become a monument itself to the struggle for civil rights over the past 50 years. This bridge represents the strength and determination, the loss and pain that have come to define the Civil Rights Movement in america. So i think what im going to do instead is just talk about it for a little while, talk about this project, sort of how it came to be, why im doing it, and then ill take questions from you guys. In 1917 the United States entered its first war of choice. And what i mean by war of choice is a war that we didnt have to fight and a war we werent sure we wanted to fight. Because every war up until then had had a very concrete goal which was a war of independence from britain or a war to hold the union together and free slaves, or we really liked california, and we

We were going to take it away from mexico. But whatever the reasons were, it was concrete. The First World War was of the serial ideal. This weird idea that was hatched by president woodrow wilson. It was to make us safe for democracy, to make the world safe for democracy. Well, that sounds great. I mean, what a noble cause we are marching off to make the world safe for democracy. But what does it mean for soldiers who didnt have democracy at home . That is what this book is about. In 1917, the United States sent over a group of its own soldiers and sets them up to fail.
