Battle lines drawn in Nyamira as Nyaribo nominates Gesami for deputy

THE STANDARD POLITICS Nyamira Deputy Governor Nominee James Gesami addresses Nyamira residents on December 29, 2020. [Sammy Omingo, Standard] Nyamira County assembly is staring at another row after Governor Amos Nyaribo resubmitted the name of James Gesami for approval as his deputy. The assembly rejected Gesami in January with 21 voting against the nomination and only 15 supporting. And as the Assembly resumes sittings on June 6, it is not clear whether the MCAs will approve this time. Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party had on April 12written to Nyaribo to nominate lawyer Charles Rigoro as his deputy in what was termed as an understanding between the party and the governor.

Rough relationship between the Executive and County Assemblies

THE STANDARD KENYA Council of Governors Chair and Embu Governor Martin Wambora. [File, Standard] Several county assemblies and the executive are embroiled in wrangles hindering service delivery. The sour relationship has been attributed to political re-alignments ahead of the 2022 elections. Some governors are facing an uphill task to win the support of the MCAs to approve nominees to fill key positions in the county government, the budget or laws. In some counties, the MCAs have threatened to impeach governors or assembly Speakers who do not dance to their tune. In Taita Taveta, a row has erupted between the executive and the assembly over the appointment of 10 programme officers to coordinate development.
