Paul Ryland was born on June 24, 1942, to Evelyn Anne and Norman Ryland. His father was the local butcher and his mother had a sweetshop in Newland Street. Paul was the youngest of three children, having two older sisters, Norma and Patricia. He went to Alleyn Court School, in Westcliff, and Felsted School. He then attended Writtle Agricultural College and was very active in Witham Young Farmers, helping to run it as a business and using the money to create the charity for educating young farmers. This is now run by the County Federation. Paul was actively involved in local politics from a very early age until his death in April.
