Muslim candidates improve tally in Assam, Kerala; number goes down in WB
Only Assam and Kerala registered a slight rise in the number of Muslims elected to the assembly, while it went down in West Bengal. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry showed no improvement in the trend.

Hyderabad: The results of five state assembly elections that were announced by the Election Commission on Sunday revealed that Muslim candidates in the contest barely showed any significant rise in tally.

Murshidabad: The district of Murshidabad, Bengal’s third largest with 22 assembly seats, is headed for a direct fight. The battle lines in the former administrative headquarters of undivided Bengal have been drawn primarily between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Sanjukta Morcha, an alliance of Left parties, the Congress and new entrant Indian Secular Front (ISF).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the poll-bound state of West Bengal today (April 10). PM Modi is scheduled to attend an election rally in Siliguri. Meanwhile, polling for 44 assembly seats in phase four of the West Bengal election will take place today.
In 1927, Oscar Hammerstein II had penned Ol’ Man River. Set to tune by Jerome Kern and sung by Paul Robeson, the song became a milestone. Later, it inspired Bhupen Hazarika to write a song on another mighty river.
“
Bistirno du parer, ashonkho manusher hahakar shuneo, nishobde nirobe O Ganga tumi, Ganga boicho keno (On your sprawling banks you hear the cries of countless people, still O Ganga, why do you flow),” Hazarika wrote.
The song, which spoke about the pains, thoughts, lives and aspirations of people dwelling on the banks of the Ganga, still resonate in Malda and Murshidabad located on the left and right banks of the river.
