Elijah Gash a Diamond in the Rough at Albany

Elijah Gash a Diamond in the Rough at Albany Fri Mar 12 2021 | Nelson Rice | College Elijah Gash collected the ground ball and saw an open lane of turf in front of him. He didn’t hesitate, sprinting from Albany’s restraining line and into the offensive end. He face dodged one Hartford defenseman, then ran over another to score his first Division I goal and give Albany a 13-5 lead midway through the fourth quarter.  The Great Danes went nuts after the long pole goal. The Hawks called a timeout to regroup.  “I grew up wanting to play at the highest level, and I’m here now,” Gash said earlier this week after the 16-6 win. “Just being able to celebrate with the guys after [the goal] was unreal. I can’t really explain it, you know?”

Defense already hitting stride for UAlbany men's lacrosse

Defense already hitting stride for UAlbany men’s lacrosse | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS UAlbany s Steven Kunz, right, defends Matt Eccles during practice on Wednesday. Shares0 ALBANY The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team gets a turbo boost on offense this weekend. The defense, meanwhile, has already hit its stride, based on how the back line performed in a 15-9 victory over Colgate at Fallon Field last Saturday. The Great Danes returned 11 players to the lineup this week after they had missed the season opener because of COVID-19 protocols, among them Tehoka Nanticoke and Graydon Hogg. So when UAlbany plays Hartford Saturday on the road at noon, the Hawks face a daunting challenge stopping a starting attack that includes Nanticoke, Jakob Patterson and freshman Camden Hay.

Quint's Top 20: On We March

Welcome to March. There’s no turning back now. Blowout Saturday featured a ton of one-sided affairs. We witnessed some Week Two results that didn’t correlate to Week One performance. Teams improve a great deal after their initial outing. March is about improvement. Strive to get better this week as a team, as a unit and as an individual. Same-day bus rides and empty bleachers conspire to snuff your spark. The fire burns from within, take a moment to connect with your why.  Early in the year, this poll is more art than science or math. I try not to look at the other polls. Instead, preferring to watch games and talk to coaches. Film don’t lie. Groupthink is never profitable.
