Ohio State came into Monday night’s National Championship game feeling good after their big win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. They knew the challenge ahead of them an Alabama team with one of the greatest offensive skill players the game has ever seen in DeVonta Smith and a bunch of pieces around him that made the Crimson Tide the favorite to win the whole thing since early in the season. The answer was a resounding no, as Ohio State was throughly dominated by Alabama in Miami. Justin Fields and the prolific Ohio State offense, fresh from piling up 639 yards in a semifinal win over Clemson, couldn’t find the same groove against Alabama on Monday night.
Fields, who passed for 385 yards and six touchdowns against Clemson, had some outstanding moments against Alabama but not enough to make a difference. The Tide built up a big lead by halftime and a smothering pass rush kept the Buckeyes offense in check on the way to a 52-24 Alabama win.

“On offense we couldn’t go score for score with them and it got out of hand,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said.

Waddle has been out since breaking his right ankle against Tennessee on Oct. 24.

In a message posted to Instagram, Haubeil said he tested positive for COVID-19 and is asymptomatic but is extremely upset to miss the game.
