How I Convinced My Bangladeshi Immigrant Parents to Get The Vaccine

By Jahin Tanvir Published July 26, 2021 Getting the vaccine during a global pandemic sounds like an obvious course of action from the outside. But with many communities of immigrant families, this comes with a myriad of challenges. When I first approached my mother to get the vaccine, I received a barrage of questions and hesitations. As we live in South-West Sydney where the majority of the outbreaks were occurring, I thought of this conversation as a natural reaction to our dire situation. What I predicted to be a swift, five-minute chat turned into a three-hour lecture on trust, indecision, and misinformation.

Kat speaks up about minority communities

Young Canberra Citizen of the Year, Mx Kat Reed… “Having representations of those people with those intersections winning awards and being recognised for their work is really important to encouraging people to get involved.” Photo: Rohan Thomson. CANBERRA activist Kat Reed hopes to raise the profile of diverse young people in the community after being recently named Young Canberra Citizen of the Year.  The 25-year-old received the award at an event held earlier this month, and says it will bring more attention to people who identify as LGBTQIA+, are living with a disability and are from an ethnically diverse background.

Young Australians have returned to mainstream news but will it last?

Young Australians have returned to mainstream news but will it last? By Jessica Lord Normal text size It was an unrelenting 12 months of news. As the country lurched from the Black Summer to the COVID-19 pandemic, from an economic recession to the Black Lives Matter movement and a remarkable United States election, it is not surprising that news outlets achieved record readership in 2020, reaching 96 per cent of Australians. And it is Australia s young people - often accused of being apolitical or neglectful of mainstream media - for whom this shift could have the most significant long-term impact. Newspapers increased their readership among young people in 2020.
