OECS works toward securing a beneficial outcome on Fisheries Subsidies

The OECS Commission continues to work toward a final outcome on the World Trade Organization’s Fisheries Subsidies Negotiations by convening a High-Level Virtual Workshop on 24 and 25 February 2021. The event was supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts (Pew) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).
Senior Trade, Foreign Affairs, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Officials of each of the seven full Protocol Member States of the OECS participated in the workshop. They were joined by several senior staff members of the OECS Commission.
The opening ceremony was addressed by Mrs. Jacqueline Emmanuel-Flood, Director of the Economic and Regional Integration Division of the Commission; Ambassador Santiago Wills of Colombia, Chair of the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Negotiations; as well as representatives of Pew and the IISD.

OECS Agriculture Ministers Discuss Recovery and Transformation of the Sector

A SPECIAL Meeting of Agricultural Ministers of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) was held virtually on Tuesday, February 16th 2021, under the Chairmanship of the Honourable Samantha Marshall, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs for Antigua and Barbuda.
In the main, the Meeting focused on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) COVID-19 Investment Initiative and the strategic ways in which the information will strengthen the OECS’ Food and Agriculture Sector Recovery and Transformation plan.
The health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to threaten the adequate functioning of food supply chains to the region as many countries move to secure their domestic supplies by imposing export restrictions.

CASTRIES, St Lucia, (OECS) â With the support of the Pew Charitable Trusts (Pew) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission will be convening a high-level workshop on the ongoing World Trade Organization (WTO) fisheries subsidies negotiations on February 24-25, 2021.
This Workshop is being targeted at senior trade, foreign affairs, fisheries, maritime affairs and other relevant officials in Member States.
WTO members are under a mandate to reach an agreement to end harmful fisheries subsidies by the next meeting of the ministerial conference, the Organization s top-level decision-making body. The next meeting of the ministerial conference is expected to be convened before the end of 2021. The fisheries subsidies mandate aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.6 which tasks the WTO with reaching an agreement to end harmful
