CAL FIRE hosted a fire inspection to protect Butte County homes
CAL FIRE helped Butte County residents to make sure their home has enough defensible space around it ahead of the fire season.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - With these dry conditions, CAL FIRE is taking steps to help you keep your home protected from wildfires.
One neighborhood off of the Skyway where inspectors were out educating homeowners about defensible space Wednesday.
CAL FIRE inspectors were going around houses making sure people had enough defensible space around their homes.

Chico community on high alert after Gunnison Fire burned over 500 acres
CAL FIRE said because of all the resources they were able to have at the scene, they were able to prioritize attacking the Gunnison Fire where it was threatening homes the most.

CHICO, Calif. -
It was a frightening Saturday afternoon for Walter Leonard as flames quickly tore through an area very close to his home.
“It was pretty scary,” Leonard explained.
Leonard has lived in Chico almost his whole life but has only lived in this home on Munjar Road with his family since last summer. He hopes to never have to experience a fire again.

Firefighters are ready for this year’s fire season
Firefighters across Butte County and beyond are already preparing for this year’s fire season.

Compared to when he first started, he has seen a lot of change.
But right now, firefighters are getting ready.
“We are going to get in peak staffing June 1st,” he said. “We are going to have a surge of 16 additional firefighters this year in the Cal Fire Butte Unit. That’s just for our fire engines. Additionally, we have four type one hand crews and with those hand crews, they are going to do their readiness drills in the middle of May.”
