How a new fund for Black artists in Sacramento is changing the lives of local creatives

Feb. 8 Black artists in the Sacramento region are being celebrated and praised for their work, thanks to the Black Artists Fund and their seasonal awards.
The Black Artists Fund is an advisory board of eight Black women looking to invest in art creatives around the Sacramento region. The purpose is to raise funding for Black artists so they can afford to expand their creative minds and prolong their art careers.
So far, the Black Artists Fund has raised over $42,000 thanks to donations on their GoFundMe page, which will go toward their Summer 2021 grantees. This is the highest amount they ve raised since starting last year.

“The African American family is strong, and they’re very wise,” Jackie Cole said.
“Family means everything to me,” said Jackie’s son, Todd Cole.
Every February, the Association for the Study of African Life and History comes up with a theme for Black History Month. This year’s theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.”
“For Black people, family has always been the foundation of our culture,” USF professor Cheryl Rodriguez said.
During slavery, Rodriguez said that foundation was rocked to its core with families who were torn apart. After slavery, those families worked hard to find one another again.

They finally scored Covid vaccine appointments. Then NY state said ‘oops’

Syracuse, N.Y. – On Wednesday afternoon, dozens of residents of the Vineyards of Miller Place retirement community scored the equivalent of gold: Appointments for Covid-19 vaccines at nearby Stony Brook University.
Using a link provided by the town of Port Jefferson, resident Sharon Tiskowitz said, at least 50 people in the complex signed up to get vaccinated, taking one huge step toward resuming normal life. They quickly got emails confirming their appointments, each complete with a bar code and appointment time, under the letterhead of the New York state Department of Health.
