Family of George Floyd and local leaders to participate in ‘Stop the Violence’ community march, rally

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department is teaming up with the Houston chapter of the NAACP to host a rally meant to address the recent rise in crime as well as provide community members the opportunity to “discuss issues of concern within their community, improve police and community relations.”
Starting at 9 a.m., people will gather for the George Floyd-Harold Preston Stop the Violence Community March at Jack Yates High School. The march will end at Texas Southern University, where there will be a rally on the football field, according to the event poster.

In Houston’s historically Black Third Ward Tuesday afternoon, a crowd gathered around George Floyd’s mural, where a black-and-white, winged image of Floyd is surrounded by a halo with the words: “Forever Breathing In Our Hearts.”
But for the first time in almost a year, the mood outside the Scott Food Mart at 3341 Winbern St. was not one of grief, but of celebration: Derek Chauvin the Minneapolis Police Officer who put his knee on the back of Floyd’s neck last year for more than nine minutes as the man shouted “I can’t breathe” had just been found guilty of murder and manslaughter.

Chauvin now faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder, and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter, per a CNN report.
