Almost 750K in U.S. file new unemployment claims; more than expected

April 8 (UPI) Almost 750,000 U.S. workers have filed for new unemployment benefits, the Labor Department said in its weekly report Thursday.
The report said about 744,000 workers filed new claims last week, an increase of 16,000 claims over the previous week. Thursday s report also revised up the previous week s figure by 9,000 claims.

Thursday s report also said the national unemployment rate for the week was 2.6%. There were 3.7 million continuing claims, which lag initial claims by a week.

April 8 (UPI) More than 100 of the world s poorest countries have begun receiving COVID-19 vaccines through the World Health Organization s COVAX program, a global effort to send millions of doses to developing nations, officials said Thursday.
The WHO said the COVAX facility has so far delivered almost 40 million vaccine doses across six continents, supplied by AstraZeneca, the Pfizer-BioNTech partnership and the Serum Institute of India.

April 6 (UPI) Oxford University researchers on Tuesday paused a trial of the jointly developed AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in children as Britain s medical regulator reviews rare instances of blood clots in adults.
The trial in children as young as 6 years old was put on hold while Britain s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, reviews rare cases of people experiencing blood clots while simultaneously having low levels of blood platelets, a university representative told CNN.

April 7 (UPI) European Union medical regulators said Wednesday that there is a possible link between the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and isolated cases of blood clotting in some adults who d received the shot.
The EU s European Medicines Agency concluded after studies that blood clotting could be listed as a possible side effect from AstraZeneca s Vaxzevria COVID-19 vaccine. The EMA s safety committee said, however, that it might occur only in very rare cases.
