‘We will miss you’: JCFD memorializes veteran deputy chief who died from cancer Updated Dec 13, 2020; Facebook Share Kearney died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. Family, friends and members of the Jersey City Fire Department gathered at the Farrier Statue in Lincoln Park to commemorate the line of duty death and his 38 years of service to the department. “He was a man’s man,” said retired Battalion Chief Jack Farrington. “He was a true leader and always cared.” Kearney, born in Jersey City, served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970 to 1975. He was appointed to the JCFD in 1972. During his service, he went through the ranks of lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and deputy chief, which he was when he retired in 2010.
