automated signals registered on the inmarsat network. this is, in a sense, the so-called, what s become known as the hand shake. your satellite looks for planes. it found a plane but didn t receive any data. i m simplifying. is that the gist of it? richard, as ever, you are spot-on. the system is simple. if you think about the satellite network the same as a mobile phone network, you think of the on-board box, the classic arrow from inmarsat as the hand set and then any apps like the acar system or voice communications, as being apps on the hand set. the app were turned off by the hand set wasn t. the network was looking every hour on the hour to see whether the service was required. that s all there was. chris, let me ask you. is there more information from inmarsat to come? is there more data that you have access to that you are looking at or is this the limits of what
370. the crew is not sending back real-time data but they do report on voice communications that they have seen nothing that supports what the australian military said was suspect debris floating on the water. that doesn t mean that it is not there. it just means that so far, the p-8 in its search has been unable to find anything that reflects what those satellite photographs suggested. of course, that would be a suggestion of some sort of debris that may be from this boeing 777. let me ask some very basic questions, kerry. the first thing that come to mind, if this was skin which bob hager again, 25 years of reporting said that is probably the most likely object that would be found floating of that size. i mean, it seems to me it is either there or it s not after 12 days of being on the ocean. it is not as if even at 25 knots, it would go into a completely different area or
compartment downstairs and immobilize whichever communication systems they wanted to. the transponder, you just turn it off. but they were still broadcasting. they had voice communications. he said good night or roger that or whatever it was he said. but again, we get to the point. why is this happening? what s the point? if it was suicidal, why didn t he pull into the ocean right away? why are you going to fly around for seven hours? and you re preferring to the previous egypt air. yeah. so all my colleagues and i were scratching our heads. we talk in circles just like everybody else because we don t have a logical what are the references to reality of somebody taking an airplane, flying it around for seven hours, and crashing it? we may never know. the investigation continues, and the speculation will continue. thank you, tom. we re going to continue to follow the latest on the search throughout the hour here on
