A striking modern house on the oldest road in Britain, yet fitting perfectly into the landscape

Country Life Trending: The views and the history are equally breathtaking at High Point, a striking new house in an ancient setting. Nobody really knows which is the oldest road in Britain, but when discussion turns to that subject then one name is certain to pop up: The Ridgeway. This 87-mile route from Overton Hill, near Avebury, to Ivinghoe Beacon, just outside Leighton Buzzard, has been walked for at least four millennia, and probably even more. As it trails through the countryside it passes by equally ancient sites: the stone circle at Avebury, the White Horse at Uffington and Waylands Smithy, a burial site that pre-dates Stonehenge by 1,000 years.

Discovering Britain: The twin peaks of the Berkshire Downs

Geographical Magazine Discovering Britain: The twin peaks of the Berkshire Downs Written by  Rory Walsh 2020 For this month s Discovering Britain trail, Rory Walsh encounters a view of twin peaks on the Berkshire Downs Most winter sports fans seeking a challenge probably wouldn’t think of an Oxfordshire village. Yet Little Wittenham, near Didcot, has not one but two seasonal slopes. Round Hill and Castle Hill are a pair of peaks that literally stand out from surrounding flat fields. Circular and almost symmetrical, their nicknames include the ‘Berkshire Bubs’ and ‘Mother Dunch’s Buttocks’ (the former after old county boundaries, the latter a previous Lady of the Manor). The hills are commonly known though as Wittenham Clumps. When snow settles, their banks make an enjoyable course for sledging: ‘There’s a side of Round Hill that offers a good long run. It’s quite steep, not for the faint-hearted.’

Ridgeway visitors urged not to damage historic site

Visitors to the historic Ridgeway path have been urged not to damage the historic route. The Ridgeway is thought to be the oldest road in Europe and authorities are asking visitors to the site not to drive or park where they re not allowed. It travels from just outside Swindon for 87-miles until reaching Ivinghoe Beacon outside of London. Oxfordshire County Council’s Ridgeway officer, Sarah Wright, said: “We want to raise awareness of how to care for the trail. With so many visitors, it’s even more important that everyone uses the trail safely and responsibly. “Just one car driving over wet ground can create a long stretch of wheel ruts that costs tens of thousands of pounds to repair and it is especially galling when the driver shouldn’t have been driving along there in the first place.
