the hot seat. hope is part of the jared and ivanka wing. yesterday we saw josh rafael who is very close with hope hicks. this is jared kushner s outgoing white house communications director. hope and josh really worked together. jared is in some trouble. i think what we re starting to see is the unraveling of that power structure within the west wing. i don t know if it speaks to what happens to jared s position, but certainly it is a big loss for the president. let me just throw out two thoughts and ask you to react to them, jeremy. one, we opened the show by saying it is a standoff, and the jared and ivanka wing has suffered a big blow with jared being stripped of the clearances necessary to do his job. with josh leaving, we that news broke during our hour yesterday. hope hicks, that breaking during our hour. thank you, news gods. anybody not having the benefit of knowing her, the white house communications director is
where both sides will actually listen to these messages and we can come to a coherent place in our national life. what will you be listening for from this president tonight in his first state of the union? you know, one of the things you can always tell, william saffire, the great columnist and nixon speechwriter said the state of the unions were particularly important. presidential press conferences were important in the old day because they forced decisions. there would be issues and policy. there would be issues in the bureaucracy that had not been decided. but you had to decide them in order to put them in the speech. what you can tell often with president trump is which side of his brain is currently prevailing. is it stephen miller or is it more the kushner/ivanka wing? is it more the establishment? is it more the base? i think one thing to do is to keep score tonight and see how much how often does he tip
the communications shop in this white house, under sean spicer, is sort of, priebus area. jared and ivanka wing, has long wanted a different chief of staff. and long been frustrated at communications shop. you can see, that that is a feeling that a lot of times is shared by the president. whether he has been convinced by his daughter and son-in-law about this or whether it is just convane yeenient to blame the spokespeople for not being able to clean up the mess he s creates. go back early on. donald trump said well he gives the communication job, a c, c-plus. that continues. this is just a narrative. something we hear over and over and over again. from this white house. the problem there is, much bigger than communications and messaging i think safe to say. chris dicky. even with your family s deep southern roots. most of the year you are an american in paris.
mandate they have, just get me something that works, that makes me look good, that makes me look accomplished. that s where the battle is right now. whose vision is going to garner the president wins at this point in time. while the bannon wing has had a lot of policy to put on the board, immigration ban, even the health care effort overall has been a pretty traditional republican effort, a lot of that has not held up. this the argument that, you know, the kushner, cohn, ivanka wing are sort of saying maybe it s time to take a different strategy. maybe it s time to go straight down the middle. dad, you re not an ideological president, let s go that way. that s a big word to have, though, maybe. my life growing up exactly that dynamic on state level, maybe that doesn t exist in that environment. what you need are people who have done this at a high level that come forward with certainties, if we do, this will
