having no idea when i would become eligible, i will tell you, i feel this personally. as the president made clear tonight, he s saying this doesn t necessarily mean all american adults are going to be vaccinated by the end of next month, by may 1st. but he is ordering all states and territories to open eligibility to all adults by no later than may 1st, which means you can get in line, which means you can start setting up your appointment, which means you can make your plans. any american adult who wants a shot will be free to sign up for one, and the president says his administration will do everything it can to make vaccine shots available to every single american who wants one. and that is just almost unbelievably good news. for all of the americans who want to get vaccinated, present company included, but also for what it says about the progress the administration feels it s making toward that ultimate goal of getting everybody vaccinated. and you know, also, it matters,
the way now for massive amounts of aid to begin flowing including direct payments of up to $1,400 that could land in some people s bank accounts as soon as this weekend. this comes exactly one year after the kworldworld health organization declared a coronavirus pandemic that so far has claimed more than 530,000 american lives and infected almost 30 million people in the u.s. alone. by contrast, a year ago today, there were just 1,100 known cases here in the united states, underscoring the virus s devastating spread across the country and, indeed, around the world. and the cdc has just confirmed to cnn that data suggests 2020 was the deadliest year in u.s. history, with a 15% increase in the death rate due to the pandemic. let s go to the whoite house, or chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins is joining us now. we re told that the president has been working on this speech for a week. what s the latest? reporter: yeah, wolf, top aides say he s been editing it line
and as you point out, he seems to cross the legal line repeatedly in these phone calls. and it also fills in some of the pieces about who was involved in this campaign and what the pattern of corrupting events were. again, this may be a racketeering investigation in georgia based on actions and statements from the district attorney s office. but the white house chief of staff really did turn up bodily in person, surprise, at the audit in georgia when they were auditing the absentee ballots in cobb county. he showed up in person. then the next day he apparently told the president to call the investigator leading that audit while he told her what answer he wanted and how much she d be praised when she produced that correct answer, which was that he mysteriously won the election. i mean, that s just it s starting to read like an elmore leonard book. and you hear on the phone call something you d otherwise never hear in a phone call with the president of the united states.
