SCC to continue providing garbage collection

The Suva City Council has been granted approval to continue providing garbage collection during the lockdown period.
SCC Chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua says they will ensure that COVID-19 protocols are practiced during the collection schedules and normal Saturday collections will see them providing the services in the respective Suva City, Nasinu Town and Tacirua areas.
He says they have noted an increase in volume of household garbage generated over the last three weeks.

People found not following social distancing regulations within the Central Business District (CBD) such as in supermarkets and markets could be charged.
Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said this also goes for businesses that fail to have proper markings to display the two-metre social distancing.

Suva City Council special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua said staff found disposable masks floating like jellyfish in the Nabukalou creek on Monday. Tikoduadua said he is worried that the discovery on Monday at the Nabukalou Creeks hints at a new kind of pollution, one set to become ubiquitous. He said disposable masks are plastic products that cannot be readily biodegraded. “Face masks are our biggest asset in the fight against the pandemic, but it could be our next potential environmental threats as people not disposing of their masks in the rubbish bin,” he said

People are not permitted to enter public places in Suva without wearing face masks, says Suva and Lami special administrators chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua.
And to assist in enforcement, the council and Employment Minister Parveen Kumar yesterday handed out 800 face masks to market vendors in Suva.
“We have heard that some are selling face masks for $3,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
“This is why we have come on board to hand out free face masks to market vendors to help contain the spread of COVID-19.
