First austerity, then Covid – how can councils balance the books?
With falling incomes and increased expenditure, further cuts to local services are inevitable. Only more government spending can prevent this

Local authorities have been on the frontline throughout the pandemic, providing support to residents and distributing various government grants. But they have also been heavily financially impacted, and councils say years of austerity has made them unprepared for the impact of the pandemic. This could lead to drastic service cuts in the future, as local councils try to stay afloat while providing valuable services to residents.

Small businesses in the Eastlondonlines boroughs have experienced a steady rate of growth over the past decade, as the graph below shows; however, the devastating financial impact of a pandemic has left the future of many local businesses hanging in the balance.
While the government has announced financial support for both businesses and councils in the form of grants, our interviews with local businesses raise doubts about whether the support goes far enough. Some claim they have fallen through the safety net altogether. Meanwhile, local authorities are also struggling financially as a result of the pandemic.
