The Democratic Alliance welcomes the sentence of life imprisonment imposed for the murder of Mr. Alwyn van Zyl and the assault of Rene van Zyl which took place in Mookgophong in March 2020. The sentencing took place in the Polokwane High Court, where the 3 accused were found guilty on numerous charges. During this farm attack Mr. Alwyn van Zyl (79) was tied up and strangled on his farm Badseloop, located in Mookgophong. He tragically succumbed to the injuries. His wife, Mrs. René van Zyl was also assaulted and sustained serious injuries during this horrific incident.
