lieutenant charles joseph gliniewicz was a 32 year police veteran and just days from retiring. rosa florence joins us with the latest development. reporter: i just got off the phone with the commander who is in charge of the investigation here now. and he tells me that that massive munanhunt has been call off and in this point it s in the investigation phase. so what does it mean? let me give you the background here. he says that after gliniewicz was shot and killed, they established a 2 mile perimeter around the scene and they sent hundreds of agents to go this the in there, knock on ever door, go through every single abandoned building because in that area, there is abandoned buildings used by squatters sometimes, overgrown areas, he says that they combed through every inch
again and again to make sure that these three suspects were not in that area. after they finished doing that, he says at that point it goes in to the investigation phase. what they re doing now, they re trying to gather surveillance video which they have recovered he tells me and they have two to three investigators combing through that video. he has some has great video quality, others a little grainy, but they have not found anything that would give the public a clue as to who we re talking about here in these three individuals who have only been described as two white males and a black male. now, again, they are collecting evidence. i asked about witnesses, is there an eyewitness. he tells me this is a remote secluded area. there wasn t anybody that they know of. but of course they are asking anybody if you saw anything for them to come forward and give a description or anything that
the busiest stretch of rail busiest in north america. more than 11 people ride this every year. tens of thousands every day. 2,000 railcars pass through here every day. and, sara, overnight, when this happened the response was very quick. and it was immense. reporter: absolutely. when we first arrived here we got here about an hour and a half or so after it all happened there were huge numbers of vehicles here. firefighting vehicles. there were ambulances here. the police were here. i mean we saw at least a doozen on just one street alone, so they had a really big response. the governor talked about how he was very proud of the first responders here. now, we re into the investigation phase. and we re going to see the national transportation safety board show up and do what they do their expertise needed in these situations. they re going to want to look
that we have experienced up there. this evening, the only shots we were aware of were the shots taken from across the street. in other words, these police officers were standing there and they were shot. just because they were police officers. so clearly his belief being that he feels they the officers were targeted. they are still in the investigation phase. we want to be clear that we don t know if this has anything to do with the protests. this could be a long standing beef. we don t know who it was. the protesters themselves in many cases were frightens themselves themselves because they heard the gunshots and dropped to the ground. now it is a matter of the police to do the investigation to see what happens next. this issue and the worry that things would start to turn on police in a way, we have seen a lot of inciting on the part of a few of some of the protesters. we also have seen protesters out there simply expressing themselves in a peaceful manner.
police dogs out, the perimeter seems secure. folks from office buildings that look on to mall are sort of all outside on their balconies to look outside to see what s going on. i think the tension has sort of dissipated because we re told we re allowed to go outside. it s not a situation right now. i think it s turning into the investigation phase to figure out what happened. i will also point out, tamron, this incident did cause the united states congress to grind to a halt as the house floor is in recess. a lot of members were actually caught in the chamber. they were not allowed to leave the chamber to go back to their offices. so the proceedings of government stopped. are you able to see what s on our air right now? yes, i do. i see they re pushing a gurney. looks like the gentleman has on a capitol police uniform. yes, that would be a capitol police uniform.
